GLENN RANGIUIA TICKS ONE OFF HIS BUCKET LIST…

game birds of Cordoba Argentina hunter experience

“Bird hunting has been a great part of my life for many years. Each May, my son Simon travels from Australia to join me, along with a friend from Auckland. Together, we head to a farm in Northland for several days of shooting. However, in recent years, we found ourselves firing fewer rounds. So we asked ourselves—what next?”

During duck season, I spoke with shooters who had experienced dove hunting in Córdoba, Argentina. That conversation led me online—and what I found was incredible. Estimates suggest there are over 50 million doves in the region, supported by vast agricultural production and ideal conditions.

The game

The main target among the game birds of Cordoba Argentina is the Eared Dove. These birds are small but abundant, weighing around 100–112 grams. We shot doves returning to roost, often full of grain after feeding all day.

The region’s agriculture plays a major role in sustaining these populations. Large grain fields and cattle feeding areas attract massive numbers of birds. With a mild climate and the ability to breed multiple times per year, dove populations grow rapidly.

Pigeons offer an additional challenge. Species like the Pica Zuro and the Spotted Pigeon (locally known as “Pichón”) are faster and more unpredictable in flight. They require sharper reflexes and better shooting technique.

After the hunt, the birds are collected and distributed to local communities. We even tried pigeon breast prepared on a traditional Argentine asado—it was outstanding.

The guns

Simon brought his 12-gauge Beretta A400 Xplor, while I used a Benelli Montefeltro 20-gauge. Importing firearms into Argentina requires paperwork and a fee, but the process was manageable.

That said, many hunters prefer to rent guns locally. C&C Outfitters offers reliable semi-automatic shotguns, making logistics easier for international visitors.

The ammunition

Ammunition quality can vary. Most outfitters use 25–28 gram loads with shot sizes 7 or 8. While generally effective, we did experience occasional misfires, so it’s important to stay cautious.

The shooting experience

The shooting volume was simply incredible. On our first afternoon, we each fired around 1,000 rounds in less than three hours. Despite jet lag, we managed impressive tallies.

Doves are fast—often faster than clay targets. Initially, I struggled with lead and distance estimation. However, with time, I adjusted and improved my accuracy.

The sheer number of birds is hard to describe. At times, thousands filled the sky. It was nonstop action and one of the most intense shooting experiences I’ve ever had.

Birdboys

The birdboys were exceptional. They handled everything—from loading shells to tracking birds and providing refreshments. Their efficiency allowed us to focus entirely on shooting.

They also provided equipment such as chairs, coolers, and shell retrievers. Their professionalism greatly enhanced the overall experience.

Santa Fe duck hunting

We also traveled to Santa Fe for duck hunting. The journey was long, but absolutely worth it. The wetlands were vast, and the number of ducks was impressive.

We hunted from shallow water using decoys and natural cover. Over three days, we had excellent results, with hundreds of ducks taken.

Costs and outfitter

The trip included accommodation, meals, and guided hunts. Additional costs covered ammunition, licenses, and tips. Overall, the experience delivered excellent value considering the volume of shooting.

We stayed at La Rosada lodge, operated by C&C Outfitters. The facilities were comfortable, and the service was outstanding. From arrival to departure, everything was handled professionally.

The lodge is located close to prime hunting areas, minimizing travel time. The team ensured we had the best possible experience throughout our stay.

Was it worth it? Absolutely. If you are passionate about wingshooting, experiencing the game birds of Cordoba Argentina should be on your bucket list.
