5 Steps to Long-Range Rifle Accuracy

5 Steps to Long-Range Rifle Accuracy

It seems like every rifle shooter suddenly wants to be an “American Sniper.” We used to think we were real riflemen when younger, taking the occasional mule deer or pronghorn at 400-plus yards. Though we practiced obsessively, we really were stretching things with the light rounds we were shooting then. But modern technology has made longer shots feasible, and by this I also mean more ethical. But there’s more to long-range shooting than simply taking longer shots.

Proper equipment and preparation is paramount.

Long-Range Prerequisites

If you want to join the long-range crowd, you have some work to do to get ready. “Long range” is relative — for some 400–500 yards is long; for others it’s much farther. Wind drift, fundamentals, and realistic practice are key. Below are five focused areas to develop.

1. The Rifle

Rifle long-range setup and cartridge selection

Cartridge choice depends on target species and intended range. For longer shots choose bullets with high ballistic coefficients and make sure your barrel twist stabilizes heavy-for-caliber projectiles. Fast rifling twist (1:7–1:9) and an adjustable, crisp trigger (around 2½–3½ lb) greatly aid accuracy. Consider a quality aftermarket barrel or a rifle built for long-range work.

2. Better Ammo

Precision ammunition and reloading for long-range accuracy

Reloading lets you find the exact load your rifle prefers, often turning 1-inch groups into ½-inch groups. Heavier, long-for-caliber bullets improve trajectory and wind performance. Investing time in load development pays off at extended ranges.

3. Long-Range Glass

Accurate ranging and clear optics are indispensable. Invest in a quality laser rangefinder or range-finding binoculars and a scope with sufficient magnification, precise turrets and fine reticles. Consider 30mm tubes and appropriate MOA/MRAD turrets for adjustments at distance.

4. Rest Assured

Stable shooting rest and tripod for long-range accuracy

Reliable rests (adjustable shooting cradles, benches or immovable natural rests) are essential. Bipods or sticks often lack the steadiness for the longest shots; use backpacks, rolled jackets or fixed objects when hunting in the field to create a stable platform.

5. Gaining Confidence

Confidence comes from deliberate practice: range time at extended distances, varmint shooting for high-volume practice, and learning to call wind and holdover. Build realistic maximum-effective-range limits for ethical, successful hunting shots.

Conclusion

Long-range accuracy blends the right rifle and ammo, precision optics, stable rests and disciplined practice. Focus on each of these five steps to improve consistency and shoot responsibly at extended ranges.
