UGARTECHEA CESA LA PRODUCCIÓN

Ugartechea ceases production after decades of manufacturing traditional Spanish shotguns. Armas Ugartechea, founded in Eibar, Spain, in 1922, was known for producing high-quality firearms using classic small-shop craftsmanship methods.

The company gained strong recognition in the United States for its side-by-side shotguns, including high-grade sidelocks and affordable boxlock models. These firearms became especially popular among hunters looking for reliable performance at a reasonable price.

End of an Era for Spanish Gunmakers

No official public announcement was made by the company, but confirmation came from long-time importers. John “Buck” Koritko, who imported Ugartechea shotguns into the U.S. for nearly 30 years through Lion Country Supply, confirmed that production had ceased.

Similarly, Canadian importer Will Bilozir of Bilozir Fine Guns reported the closure, noting his long-standing relationship with Ignacio Ugartechea and the company.

Reasons Behind the Closure

The primary reasons cited for the shutdown include rising labor costs and a challenging economic environment. Traditional Spanish gunmakers have long relied on labor-intensive craftsmanship rather than modernized production methods.

Compared to Italian manufacturers, who have embraced automation and technological advancements, Spanish workshops have struggled to remain competitive. As a result, maintaining profitability became increasingly difficult.

Remaining Inventory and Market Impact

According to reports, approximately 40 finished firearms remained in stock at the factory. These were offered at discounted prices to liquidate inventory. In North America, demand quickly increased as collectors and hunters sought to acquire one of the last available units.

Koritko noted that his inventory dropped rapidly after the announcement, highlighting the strong reputation and loyal customer base that Ugartechea had built over the years.

The Legacy of Ugartechea Shotguns

For decades, Ugartechea produced dependable and affordable side-by-side shotguns, making them a staple for upland hunting enthusiasts. Their balance of craftsmanship and value made them particularly attractive in the mid-range market.

Even after ceasing production, their firearms remain respected for durability and traditional design.

Looking Ahead

Importers are now seeking alternative manufacturers to fill the gap left in the market, particularly in the affordable side-by-side shotgun category. The challenge will be finding a maker capable of delivering similar quality at a competitive price.

For hunters and shooting enthusiasts, this marks the end of an important chapter in the history of traditional European gunmaking.
