Tibet GTX Hi: Anatomy of Good Mountain Boots (And When to Wear Them)

Last month I hunted in northern New Mexico with a pair of Tibet GTX Hi mountain boots from Lowa laced to my feet. We hunted between 8,500 and 10,000 feet in fairly steep terrain. While the ground was not extremely rugged, the Lowa Tibets performed flawlessly. Still, they were more boot than the hunt actually required.

Understanding what makes a good mountain or backpacking boot is essential when choosing the right footwear for your hunt. Not every trip requires a heavy-duty boot like the Tibet GTX Hi, and knowing when to wear them can save both money and discomfort.

When the Tibet GTX Hi Is Too Much Boot

For shorter hunts on moderate terrain, a boot like the Tibet GTX Hi can be excessive. In fact, wearing them on an easy trip is like driving a Lamborghini to the grocery store. First, they are heavy, weighing in at 1,920 grams or 4.2 pounds per pair. In addition, they come with a premium price tag of around $395.

Because of their stiffness and weight, these boots also require a break-in period. It takes some time for your feet and legs to adjust before walking feels completely natural.

When High-End Mountain Boots Are Worth It

However, top-end mountain boots become invaluable when your hunt involves long distances, steep climbs, and rugged terrain. These boots are engineered for durability, stability, and support while carrying heavy loads.

In harsh environments—such as scree fields, rocky slopes, and areas above treeline—protecting your feet, ankles, and knees is not just about comfort. More importantly, it is about safety and making it back home without injury.

The Tibet GTX Hi is packed with design features that make it ideal for demanding hunts and extended backpacking trips:

• Vibram Masai outsole with 5mm deep lugs for maximum traction
• Durable polyurethane midsole, designed to last significantly longer than EVA
• High-wall rubber rand that wraps around the upper for protection
• Full-grain nubuck leather combined with a Gore-Tex waterproof liner
• X-Lacing tongue system that keeps the tongue centered and improves flex

I chose the high version of the boot for added ankle support. However, Lowa also produces a lower-cut version for hunters who prefer more flexibility.

Choosing the Right Boot for Your Hunt

Ultimately, selecting the right hunting boot depends on terrain, distance, and pack weight. While the Tibet GTX Hi excels in extreme conditions, lighter boots may be a better choice for shorter or less demanding outings.
